My Miracle Man

At Compassus, our volunteers are the heart of our hospice programs, offering compassion and support that goes far beyond the typical 9-to-5. Many come to this work through life-changing experiences, and Volunteer Coordinator Carrie Meehan and Volunteer Todd Hensel from our Columbia hospice program are no exception.

Carrie and Todd’s story began when they were high school sweethearts, but life took them in different directions. Years later, at just the right time, they reconnected – now both on a shared journey of service and healing. Carrie recently became a published author, sharing Todd’s remarkable story in her book, The Deaths and Life of a Seven-Organ Transplant Recipient. Todd, known as Carrie’s, “Miracle Man,” is living proof of the strength of the human spirit. After receiving a seven-organ transplant, he has used his second chance at life to help others navigate the often-confusing journey of life, death, organ donation and the deeper meaning of existence. Together, Carrie and Todd have transformed his remarkable story into a message of hope and purpose that they share with the world, helping others understand the gift of life and the importance of organ donation.

Living on a peaceful farm in Tennessee, Carrie continues her work as a hospice volunteer coordinator while pursuing a master’s in divinity. Todd volunteers with Compassus, offering comfort to patients, and manages their cattle farm with his service dog, Skip.

More than just volunteers, Carrie and Todd highlight the profound impact of organ donation and the power of human connection. Their story is a testament to being in the right place, at the right time, and the strength that comes from sharing their journey with others. We are deeply grateful for their dedication to our patients, families and community.

Carrie’s book, The Deaths and Life of a Seven-Organ Transplant Recipient, is now available on Amazon. We thank Carrie and Todd for their unwavering commitment to hospice care, organ donation awareness and the lives they continue to touch.
