Hospice program earned national distinction from We Honor Veterans
DALLAS – One out of four terminally ill Americans is a veteran. Because of their military service, these individuals face unique challenges including physical and mental wounds and post-traumatic stress. The Compassus program serving Dallas and the surrounding areas is committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care to veteran patients facing serious or life-limiting illness and their families. For this reason, the program recently achieved Level Four partnership with We Honor Veterans, a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to improve advanced illness care for veterans. Level Four is the highest level of advancement in the We Honor Veterans program.
“The selfless, courageous service of our veterans, who are among our community’s most valuable members, deserve comfort and dignity in their final months,” said Kelley Newcomer, M.D., medical director for Compassus – Dallas. “We are very proud of this accomplishment and look forward to helping other hospice programs across the country learn the necessary skills to serve and honor these men and women with high-quality care.”
We Honor Veterans provides educational tools and resources to help hospice providers promote veteran-centered activities, increase organizational capacity to serve veterans, develop and/or strengthen strategic partnerships, increase access and improve quality of care.
NHPCO and the VA invite hospice providers to pursue four levels of partnership with the We Honor Veterans program. Hospice partners advance through the program by completing required activities for each of the four levels of commitment. We Honor Veterans level designations, symbolized by stars beneath the WHV logo, enable VA staff and veterans to easily identify hospices that have made the commitment to offer veteran-specific care and services provided by a competent and highly skilled workforce.
NHPCO is the largest nonprofit membership organization representing hospice and palliative care programs and professionals in the U.S. The organization is committed to improving end-of-life care and expanding access to hospice with the goal of profoundly enhancing quality of life for patients and families facing serious illness.
The mission of the VA is to fulfill President Lincoln’s promise “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan” by serving and honoring the men and women who are America’s veterans.
