WILLINGBORO, N.J. – The Philadelphia Phillies game on Saturday, September 29, versus the Atlanta Braves had a special guest in attendance: hospice patient Dr. William Byrem celebrated his birthday at the game with his family, including his mother Joan, wife Krystyna and three children. The special outing was part of local hospice provider Compassus – Willingboro’s Life Inspiring Events program, which grants wishes and creates lasting memories for hospice patients and their families.
Dr. Byrem, who turned 53 earlier that week, has been a Compassus patient since August. After learning one of his favorite pastimes was attending Phillies games at Citizens Bank Park, his Compassus care team teamed up with , where Dr. Byrem resides, to ensure he could attend one last baseball game and celebrate his birthday surrounded by his loved ones.
“A common misconception about hospice is that it is about giving up when, in fact, it is truly about living life to the fullest when their time remaining is limited,” said Andrew Blank, D.O., medical director of Compassus – Willingboro. “It’s an honor to work with organizations like Cinnaminson Center to fulfill patients’ dreams and bring peace, joy and meaning to them and their loved ones.”
Dr. Byrem wore an official Philadelphia Phillies jersey provided by Cinnaminson Center to the game. He and 12 of his closest family and friends were seated in the Hall of Fame Club, where they enjoyed hot dogs and birthday cake. The family will receive a photo album to commemorate the meaningful day.
“We are grateful to have been a part of this experience for Dr. Byrem and his loved ones,” said Jason Chadwick, administrator of Cinnaminson Center. “We know this day created lasting memories they will treasure.”
