What Is Palliative Care?
Palliative care provides an additional level of support to alleviate pain, symptoms, and stress associated with a severe illness. Its primary aim is to enhance the quality of life for both patients and their families. This care also assists in navigating the healthcare system to ensure that treatments align with individual goals, values, and priorities.
Initiating palliative care does not imply that someone is abandoning hope for recovery. Support can commence at any phase of the illness, with individuals transitioning in and out of care as required.
Services offered include:
- Medical assistance for breathing difficulties
- Support for fatigue and sleep issues
- Management of constipation
- Addressing nausea or appetite loss
- Alleviating anxiety and depression
Palliative care can begin as soon as a person receives a diagnosis and does not indicate a lack of hope for recovery or finding a cure.
