Honoring Veterans: Date Night in Stevens Point
Our Compassus hospice program serving Plover, Wisconsin, along with the Compassus Living Foundation, and Ho-Chunk Casino community, had the privilege of honoring a local veteran while illustrating the true essence of our ‘Care for Who I am’ philosophy.
Meet Ray and Mary Staral, a couple whose love has withstood the test of time for over 57 years. Ray, a Vietnam War veteran, served his country with bravery and dedication in the United States Army. After retiring from a trucking company, he owned, Ray and Mary settled in Wisconsin, cherishing the quiet beauty of their surroundings.
Despite facing health challenges, Ray expressed a heartfelt wish to treat his beloved wife, Mary, to a special evening at their favorite spot, the Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg casino. Our Stevens Point hospice team heard Ray’s wish, and sprang into action.
With unwavering dedication, the Compassus Living Foundation arranged for special transportation to ensure Ray and Mary’s safety and comfort during their date night. The team reached out to Ho-Chunk Restaurant, a cherished dining spot within the casino, and were met with open arms and warm hearts. The restaurant’s chef prepared a delectable lobster and steak meal for the couple, ensuring it was an experience to remember.
But the kindness didn’t stop there. The casino generously provided Ray and Mary with playing money, allowing them to enjoy their favorite games with a touch of excitement. As Ray later shared, they were treated like royalty, feeling the warmth and care enveloping them throughout the evening.
The significance of this gesture goes beyond a simple date night. It’s a testament to the profound impact of honoring our veterans and their families, recognizing their sacrifices, and celebrating their lives through our ‘Care for Who I am’ philosophy.
A heartfelt thank you extends to the entire Stevens Point team for their dedication and commitment to making dreams come true. Gratitude also goes to Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg, particularly to Sous Chef Mitchell Giles, whose words echoed the sentiment of the evening – a chance to be part of something truly special.
In a world where kindness often feels scarce, let Ray and Mary’s story serve as a reminder that love, compassion, community, and ‘Caring for Who I am’ can create magic beyond measure. Here’s to honoring our veterans, cherishing our loved ones, and spreading kindness wherever we go.
