Turning Pain into Purpose: Jamesโ Commitment to Hospice Care
At Compassus, we often find that those called to hospice care have experienced a profound loss that shapes their purpose. For Hospice On-Call Registered Nurse, James Morris in Gadsden, AL, that loss came in the same yearโfirst his grandmother, then his mother.
Jamesโ journey into hospice began with his grandmother, a strong woman who had already beaten cancer once. When faced with a brain tumor years later, she made a choice: โIโve done all the good I can do in this world. I want to be comfortable and go home to see my God.โ Hospice was new to James then, but he quickly saw its power. He was with her in her final moments, holding her in his arms as she took her last breathโpeaceful, comfortable and on her terms.
Not long after, Jamesโ mother faced her own battle with multisystem organ failure. He knew what she wantedโto be free from machines and interventions that would not change the outcome. As her medical power of attorney, he had to make an impossible decision, one that tested his heart and strength. He recalls looking in the mirror, searching for peace and knowing deep down that honoring her wishes was the greatest act of love he could give.
Jamesโ experience didnโt just shape his perspectiveโit changed his path. He left his job at the hospital and applied to every hospice, determined that no other family should feel trapped by uncertainty or regret. Now, at Compassus, James carries that promise with him every day.
“Hospice is a calling. It takes a special person to walk alongside patients and families in their most vulnerable moments. Never think you arenโt importantโyou are. You help bridge the gap between life and death, offering comfort, dignity and peace.”
Jamesโ story is a testament to why we do what we do. Itโs about honoring life, respecting choices and ensuring no one walks this journey alone.
