A Meal to Remember for Jay Deely

A Meal to Remember for Jay Deely

We believe in honoring life’s meaningful moments at Compassus, and for Jay Deely, that meant one last dinner with his closest friends and family, enjoying his favorite meal—swordfish.

This special evening was made possible by Jillian Joyce, hospice care consultant from Northampton, Massachusetts, who saw an opportunity to bring joy to Jay in his final days. Jay was referred to Compassus by Christina Vernon, a social worker who had become a close friend through Caretenders VNA. “I really want you to meet Jay,” she said. “He’s an amazing man with incredible strength and a real straight shooter.” She was right. Despite facing multiple cancers, Jay’s humor, resilience and bravery were undeniable.

During his admission, Jay shared a cherished memory: after both losing their wives, he and his best friend Mike would meet in Hatfield for dinner, always ordering swordfish. “It was our support system,” Jay said. “You have to go try it and enjoy it for me.”

That simple wish sparked action. With the help of his devoted friend and caregiver, Orlando, Jillian and the team planned a “Life Inspiring Event” to bring Jay, his loved ones and his memories together once more. Surrounded by Orlando, Christina, his wife’s cousins Dave and Doris, his brother Bruce, his sister Joan and her husband, Jed and Mike, Jay relived those cherished moments, sharing laughter, stories and of course, swordfish.

This special evening was made possible through the Hospice Helps Foundation, particularly Marsha Fillion, who worked quickly to ensure Jay’s wish was fulfilled despite his declining mobility and health. The foundation’s generosity covered the entire meal—including a brownie sundae for Jay.

It was a night filled with love, gratitude and inspiration. And yes, most ordered the swordfish—because Jay was right.
