Luke Van Ess: Making a Difference in Hospice Care

Luke V.E. HeadshotsCompassion and connection are at the heart of our mission. Every teammate plays a crucial role in enhancing the well-being and quality of life of those we serve. Luke Van Ess, a hospice care consultant from Neenah, Wisconsin, shares what inspires him in his work, the impact he strives to make, and why he is passionate about supporting patients and families through their hospice journey.

What personal values drive you in your role, and how does your work align with those values?
Compassion, empathy and a strong sense of service drive me in my role. I value human connection and making a meaningful difference in peopleโ€™s lives. My work allows me to build relationships with patients and families, providing both expert guidance and emotional support during a challenging time. Offering dignity and comfort to those who need it most aligns perfectly with my core values.

What was a defining moment that made you proud to be part of this team?
Realizing the incredible support system within the Neenah office was a defining moment for me. The passion for helping others extends not just to patients and families but also to teammates. Knowing I can rely on this same care and support, both professionally and personally, makes this an inspiring and rewarding place to work.

What motivates you to keep coming back, even on challenging days?
The knowledge that I can make a difference in someoneโ€™s life keeps me going. Offering comfort and support to families during difficult times is incredibly meaningful. Having experienced personal loss, I understand the impact of compassionate care and that personal experience drives me to give my best each day.

If you were to tell a friend or family member why your work matters, what would you say?
Hospice care is about dignity, comfort and support during one of lifeโ€™s most challenging times. My work matters because it provides families with the guidance they need to make tough decisions while focusing on their loved oneโ€™s well-being. Itโ€™s more than healthcare, itโ€™s about human connection, easing suffering and creating a peaceful, meaningful environment.

Whatโ€™s one interaction with a patient or family that reminds you why youโ€™re here?
I once worked with a patient struggling with anxiety about her diagnosis. After spending time with her, listening to her fears and explaining what to expect, she expressed a sense of calm and relief she hadnโ€™t felt in weeks. That moment reinforced why I do this work, not just to provide care, but to bring peace of mind during uncertain times.

Whatโ€™s one thing about hospice care you wish more people understood?
Hospice care isnโ€™t just about end-of-life, itโ€™s about improving quality of life. We provide families with the resources and emotional support they need to honor their loved onesโ€™ wishes and navigate this journey with dignity. Itโ€™s about making the final days as peaceful and meaningful as possible for everyone involved
