A Day at the Lake: Celebrating Norma Trooper

A Day at the Lake: Celebrating Norma Trooper

care moment camp

At Compassus, our ‘Care for who I am’ philosophy means more than just providing clinical care. It is about honoring the individual, their history, their wishes and the experiences that bring them joy. Recently, this philosophy shone brightly through the story of Norma Trooper, a beloved patient in our Auburn, Massachusetts, hospice program, whose deep desire to return to her family camp became a reality on her 97th birthday.

Norma’s camp, nestled by the serene Lake Wyola in Shutesbury, Massachusetts, was built in 1954 by her husband and father. A special place filled with memories, it has been a cornerstone of her life, and for years, she fondly recalled her time there. Her birthday wish was simple yet profound – she wanted to go back to the camp.

Norma’s celebration was filled with love and the presence of her family. Two of her children, including her son and daughter-in-law, along with her daughter, joined her on this day of joy. Two grandchildren – her grandson and granddaughter – completed the gathering, making the day even more special. Together, they enjoyed a homemade feast of spaghetti, salad and grilled chicken, prepared with love and care. Norma was full of excitement, even asking if she could sleep at the camp, eager to spend more time in the place that held so many fond memories.

The drive to Lake Wyola was just ten miles from her healthcare facility, but for Norma, it felt like a journey into her treasured past. She talked about the visit for days and continuously sang “Happy Birthday to me” with a smile, cherishing the day to the fullest.

Compassus Hospice Care Consultant Cindy Leblanc had the honor of accompanying Norma to this special celebration. Cindy, alongside the entire Auburn team, ensured every detail was taken care of, from transportation to planning, allowing Norma’s wish to come true. It is moments like these that reflect the heart of what hospice care is – supporting not just physical needs, but emotional and spiritual ones as well.

Norma’s story is a reminder of the power of compassion and the joy that comes from honoring who our patients are at their core. To Norma, we wish you the happiest of birthdays and look forward to continuing to celebrate the beauty of who you are every day.
