Bringing Comfort and Joy: Honoring Snong’s Heritage
At Compassus, our “Care for Who I Am” philosophy is at the heart of everything we do. We strive to provide personalized care that honors the unique histories, cultures, and preferences of our patients. Recently, our Bedford, New Hampshire hospice program had the privilege of bringing a touch of home and a reminder of younger years to our treasured patient, Snong Sungkam.
Snong grew up in a small village in Thailand where her family were rice farmers. She has a deep connection to her heritage and finds comfort in Thai food and music, which evoke cherished memories of her past. Recognizing this, Compassus Volunteer Coordinator Julie Pinard decided to bring a bit of Thailand to Snong’s current residence at Cedar Healthcare facility.
Julie’s visit was filled with thoughtful gestures and heartfelt moments. She brought with her native Thai cuisine and a CD of traditional Thai music to share with Snong. “I had lunch with Snong today,” Julie shared. “She had chicken satay and a spring roll. Snong showed me to her room where I plugged in the CD player, and we listened to her new CD. She even pulled her rocking chair over for me to sit down.”
The simple act of sharing a meal and listening to music had a profound impact. Snong was very talkative and visibly enjoyed the familiar tunes, her spirits lifted by the sounds and flavors of her homeland.
As their visit concluded, Snong held Julie’s hand and walked her down the hallway, a gesture that spoke volumes about the connection formed through this act of kindness. It was a beautiful example of how our team at Compassus goes above and beyond to ensure our patients feel seen, heard, and valued.
