Care Moment – Cabbage Patch Kids

At a heartwarming Compassus event held at Commonwealth Senior Living, residents experienced the joy of childhood anew adopting their very own Cabbage Patch Kid dolls thanks to our Fredericksburg, Virginia hospice program. This special event not only brought smiles but also fostered companionship and a renewed sense of purpose among our beloved seniors.

Cabbage Patch Kids, with their distinctive, soft features and unique identities, have sparked joy in the hearts of children and adults alike since the early 1980s. For the residents of Commonwealth Senior Living, these dolls offered more than just nostalgia; they provided a comforting presence and a chance to nurture.

During the event, led by Compassus Hospice Care Consultant Georgeanne McClain, each resident chose a doll, named it, and took on the delightful responsibility of caring for their new “baby.” The sense of ownership and the act of caregiving are profoundly beneficial, particularly in a senior living setting, as they can significantly enhance emotional wellbeing and provide a daily source of joy and engagement.

The adoption of the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls significantly increased happiness within the community. Observing the residents as they interacted and cared for their dolls was deeply touching. It’s akin to witnessing them reconnect with cherished memories while simultaneously creating new ones, which enriches their daily experiences and brings a renewed sense of joy and purpose to their lives.

Following the adoption ceremony, the community celebrated with a festive “baby shower,” complete with cupcakes, donuts, and lots of laughter. This gathering was not just about enjoying treats, but also about celebrating life, community, and new beginnings. The residents shared stories and smiles, showing off their new companions to friends and staff.
