What is Hospice

Hospice care offers patients and families physical, emotional and spiritual support during the final phase of life. Ultimately, hospice is not about dying. It is about make every moment of life as meaningful as possible.

Hospice focuses on giving patients time with family and the things they love. It enables patients to get to a personal level of pain and symptom relief while staying as present as possible.

In Home Hospice

Many patients choose to spend their final days at home. Hospice patients typically have a sense of security and familiarity at home. Most hospice providers provide families with medical equipment, medications and 24-hour access to nurses, chaplains and other services. Music therapy, pet therapy and respite care can also be part of hospice care.

Grief counseling

Care doesn’t end with a patient’s passing. Many hospice providers, including Compassus, have licensed bereavement counselors and trained chaplains to guide families through their loss.

Cost of hospice care

Hospice is covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance companies. Hospice is a financial relief for many families because services such as medication, equipment and supplies, are covered by hospice care benefits – with few out-of-pocket expenses.
